Bangs #SOL24 10/31

On Friday, my best friend from high school texted me a picture of my high school yearbook senior photo.

Look at those bangs! They started about ⅓ of the way back on my head. Every morning, I carefully curled them, brushed them to the side, and then hairsprayed them until they were stuck together in one giant flap of “feathered” hair. And, though you can’t tell here, that blue sweater has sparkles in it. Sparkles! Oh, the 80s.

That picture was still on my mind on Saturday when I went for a hair cut. Chuckling, I pulled out my phone and showed my stylist. I couldn’t quite tell if he was horrified or impressed. He chatted on about 80s and 90s clothes and hairstyles, while I stifled a laugh: He wasn’t around for those eras, so what does he know?

The picture must have stayed on his mind, too, because after my colour was done, as he was starting the cut, he said, “You keep saying you want something different. How about bangs?”

It was my turn to look horrified. “No, no,” he reassured me, “not like in the picture. You know, something more modern.” I still looked doubtful. “I wouldn’t recommend it if I didn’t think it would look good.”

So I said yes, and now I have bangs again for the first time, I think, since that high school photo. Way back then, in English class, Libby had once declared, “everyone looks better with bangs.” (At least I think it was Libby. It could have been Anne. At any rate, one of the stylish girls.) I haven’t thought of that comment in a long time, but she might have been right. If nothing else, I like the new look: it hides some of my wrinkles.

  1. So fun! I do like your new “do”, bangs especially! I enjoyed your journey from being reunited with that old yearbook photo to today. I trust you shared this with the friend who inspired it?!

  2. I love the bangs! I also love that you have stylist that will make suggestions! Mine is very reluctant to help me out even though I clearly don’t know what I’m doing. LOL It always looks fine but now and then I want something new that does not involved $300 worth of hair colour.

I will admit that every time I look at myself I wonder, “Should my hair be taller?” and I have to remind myself that we are, like, totally way past the ’80s!

    1. “Should my hair be taller?” 😂😂😂
And yes, I am lucky that he makes suggestions – though he can be pretty conservative if I don’t push a little. One of my good friends likes very dramatic cuts & she actually had to change stylists!

  3. This made my day. Lovely new cut by the way. You were obviously all that and a bag of chips in high school. In Grade 13, I was growing out the cut I had gotten in Germany that summer (about 2″ long all over my head). I was decidedly not flipping anything. Little bit of gel to polish the points and done.

  4. I love this for you!

I also now need to see my old bangs photos from the 80s. In fact I had only bangs with the rest of my head shaved with a no.1 clipper. :|

Thanks for the chuckle! –Not the current bangs, the retro ones… the current bangs are, well, bang on!? (Too much?)

  5. Amanda,

Your senior picture is cute. I bet getting your hair just right took a lot of time and copious amounts of Aqua Net. Yes, the 80s and 90s, but also the 70s, for it gave us Farrah Fawcett hair. Your new bangs are cute, too. I love the way a style can evolve and get freshened up, and bangs are good for hiding wrinkles.

  6. I love this post! And your bangs look fabulous! What a fun way for a memory to have a tangible effect on your day. I had bangs as a child, then again a few times in college, and most recently a few years ago. But my hair is much curlier now and Miami is much more humid, so they did not work the same way that they did. For me, I’ve made a no-more-bangs vow with myself. But I’ve had so many hairstyles, who knows what will happen in 5, 10, years?

    1. As far as my hair goes, I’ve learned to never say never. At one point or another, I would have sworn that I would never have short hair again, never color my hair, never have long hair again… Right now, the only thing I feel pretty confident about is that perms are no longer for me!

  7. That haircut is adorable. I have gone back to bangs as well, but usually I feather them back with some product that helps curl them. You were brave to trust your stylist and make a change. What does your husband say?

  8. Amanda, the photos are fantastic! Your bangs, and you, are beautiful, then and now! You have me thinking about how we mark the journey of our lives by our hairstyles. What wasn’t to love about 80’s big hair, I ask you?? After a while I quit perming in favor of highlights and a Princess Diana bob. As a child I had a shag (!!) and dreamed of having long hair, which I had all through middle school. My hair is long again now and I keep thinking I need to cut it off and let the color go..but…am I there yet? I’ve also been wondering of late: What about bangs? We shall see – your post is definitely an inspiration! Hair is a never-ending journey.

  9. I love the new look and especially that it was inspired by you jokingly showing your hairdresser the old photo. You structured the slice perfectly from that photo to the final one. Have fun rockin’ your bangs!
